Like any other mechanical systems, garage doors can develop problems over time. Here are some of the most common garage door issues, together with tips on how to troubleshoot them.
1. Garage door won’t open or close
One of the most frustrating problems is when your garage door doesn’t respond. The issue could be as simple as dead batteries in the remote control. Start by replacing the batteries. If that doesn’t work, check the garage door opener itself: make sure it’s plugged in and that the power source is working. Another potential issue is misaligned or blocked sensors; these are usually located at the base of the door. Clear any obstructions, and check to see if the sensors’ indicator lights are on.
2. Noisy garage door
When garage doors make grinding, squeaking or rattling sounds, the reason is often a lack of lubrication, or worn-out parts. Apply lubricant to the moving parts, including hinges, rollers and tracks. If the noise persists, inspect the rollers and hinges for signs of wear. Worn parts should be replaced promptly, to avoid further damage.
3. Garage door opens unevenly
If your garage door opens or closes unevenly, it can be due to misaligned tracks or because of an issue with the garage door springs. First of all, check the tracks for bends or debris that may be obstructing the rollers. Clean the tracks and ensure they’re properly aligned. If the issue is with the springs, it’s best to call a professional, as replacing or adjusting springs can be dangerous.
4. Slow response time
If the garage door is responding slowly to your commands, the problem could be to do with the opener or the door’s settings. Check the speed setting on your garage door opener, and ensure the tracks are clear of debris or dirt which could impede smooth movement.
5. Remote control not working
If your remote isn’t working, and you’ve replaced the batteries, try reprogramming the remote to the garage door opener. Refer to your garage door opener’s manual for instructions on re-‘pairing’.
While many minor garage door issues can be fixed by a DIY intervention, for more complex problems like broken springs or faulty wiring, it’s always safer to call a professional! And we’re the southern Scotland garage doors professionals.
